Virginia Biological Dentistry is out of network with dental insurance. We have hundreds of patients with dental insurance who come to see our biological dentist and pay fully for services rendered. As a courtesy, we file the claim with their dental insurance after the treatment, and depending on their coverage, dental insurance sends reimbursement checks to patients directly.
Genuine biological dental offices and holistic dentists often do not accept dental insurance because insurance companies operate within a conventional dentistry model that prioritizes cost control over comprehensive, patient-centered care. Here’s why:
Most dental insurance plans cover traditional procedures but do not recognize or reimburse for biological and holistic dental treatments.
Advanced, biocompatible materials (such as ceramic implants or ceramic inlays or onlays that, in contrast to popular crowns, aim to save as much of the natural tooth structure as possible) and procedures (like Platelet-Rich Fibrin or PRF therapy and laser treatments) are often excluded or minimally covered.
Insurance companies dictate the materials and methods they consider “standard,” which may conflict with a biological dentist’s approach.
Insurance companies set fee schedules based on conventional dentistry practices and not high-quality, biologically safe procedures. To stay within the insurance model, a practice would have to compromise on materials, lab work, and individualized care—something holistic and biological dentists refuse to do.
Biological dentistry emphasizes thorough diagnostics and in-depth investigation of the collected data, including detailed patient health history, personalized, comprehensive treatment planning, and addressing root causes rather than just symptoms. Such an approach requires considerable time and training that insurance companies neither cover nor recognize as important.
Insurance models favor quick, one-size-fits-all treatments that may not align with a biological dentist’s detailed, health-focused, and customized care to effectively meet individual needs.
Accepting insurance often forces dentists to follow treatment protocols that may not align with holistic principles. By remaining out-of-network, biological dentists have the freedom to provide care based on the patient’s best interest rather than what insurance dictates.
Biological dentists dedicate considerable time and financial resources to continuing education in holistic and biological dental care.
Training and education in advanced techniques such as ceramic implantology, biomimetic restorative methods, laser therapy, root cause-focused investigation and treatments, and integrative dental care that closely aligns with and is connected with overall health are neither inexpensive nor covered by insurance.
If these biological dental offices were to operate within the insurance model, they would not be able to afford the specialized education required to provide their patients with the highest level of biological dental care.
Biological dentists prioritize using the most advanced dental technologies to ensure superior patient outcomes. This includes but is not limited to:
The newest technologies and diagnostic tools require significant financial investment to provide the highest level of accurate diagnosis and effective care.
If an office accepted insurance reimbursements based on conventional dental procedures and outdated fee structures, maintaining and upgrading these advanced systems would be nearly impossible.
Biological dentistry emphasizes prevention, healthy diet, and whole-body health, whereas insurance primarily covers reactive treatments like restorative work to address an already present problem.
Many preventive therapies used in holistic offices, such as laser therapy, nutritional counseling, and toxin-free restorations, are not covered by insurance at all.
Biological dental care is an investment in long-term health. It focuses on the in-depth investigation and treatment of root causes while emphasizing overall prevention. The savings extend over time by reducing the likelihood of symptoms occurring or recurring that would require extensive and expensive interventions.
For our established patients, we offer an in-house health membership plan to help manage their dental treatment costs.
Additionally, we provide flexible payment options, including pre-payment plans and CareCredit financing, and accept Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
As a courtesy, we can file to patient dental insurance after the treatments, and, depending on their out-of-network coverage, dental insurance sends reimbursement checks directly to patients.
By being out of network with all insurances, genuine biological and holistic dentists can provide the highest-quality, most biocompatible care while continuously investing in advanced biological education and cutting-edge dental technology, free from the limitations of outdated, profit-driven insurance policies.
Some dentists practice true oral–systemic, biocompatible care—while others use the term primarily for marketing.
